Return When I’m Calm

Consider returning to a conversation only when contact is lawful, wanted, and you can behave differently.

Before you use this with another personUse communication, repair, return, or contact only when it is lawful and the other person is willing. If a court order limits contact, location, or communication, follow it exactly. A coping or communication skill never creates permission to call, text, message, visit, follow, return, or use another person to pass a message.
What it is

Returning when calm means considering a conversation again only when contact is lawful, the other person is willing, and you can listen, speak respectfully, tolerate disagreement, and accept that you may not get the outcome you want.

How to do it
First ask whether contact is legally allowed and whether the other person is willing to talk.
Check whether your body has settled.
Ask whether you can listen without interrupting.
Ask whether you can hear something you do not like.
Ask whether you can speak without threatening, insulting, or demanding.
Wait longer or do not return if the answer to any of these questions is no.
Try It Now
Remember
Being calmer does not create permission to contact someone. Return only when contact is lawful, wanted, and you can behave differently.
