Understand Shame

Recognize shame without turning it into anger, blame, or attack.

What it is

Shame is the painful feeling that something is wrong with you, not simply that you did something wrong.

How to do it
Notice the urge to defend yourself immediately.
Ask whether shame is present.
Separate behavior from identity.
Say what you did accurately.
Focus on what must change next.
Try It Now
Remember
Accountability says: I did this, and I need to change it. Shame says: this is all I am.
