Skill

Say What I Need Without Demanding

Communicate a preference or need without turning it into an order.

Before you use this with another personUse communication, repair, return, or contact only when it is lawful and the other person is willing. If a court order limits contact, location, or communication, follow it exactly. A coping or communication skill never creates permission to call, text, message, visit, follow, return, or use another person to pass a message.
What it is

A need is something you can express. A demand tries to remove the other person’s choice.

How to do it
Identify what you want or need.
State it directly.
Remove threats or consequences designed to force agreement.
Leave room for the other person to respond.
Decide what you will do if the answer is no.
Try It Now
Remember
A request leaves room for an answer. A demand removes it.
