Skill

Leave Safely Before Escalation

Create physical distance without threatening, controlling, or continuing the conflict.

Before you use this with another personUse communication, repair, return, or contact only when it is lawful and the other person is willing. If a court order limits contact, location, or communication, follow it exactly. A coping or communication skill never creates permission to call, text, message, visit, follow, return, or use another person to pass a message.
What it is

Leaving safely means creating physical distance before conflict becomes threatening, intimidating, or harmful.

How to do it
If contact is allowed, state briefly that you are stepping away.
Leave without threatening or slamming things.
Do not block anyone’s movement.
Do not follow the other person.
Do not continue the argument from another room, car, or phone.
Go somewhere safe and lawful.
Try It Now
Remember
Distance should reduce pressure, not create more of it.
