Skill

Tolerate Distress Without Acting

Experience a difficult feeling without immediately acting to remove it.

What it is

Tolerating distress means letting a hard feeling be there without doing something to make it stop right away.

How to do it
Name the emotion.
Notice the urge.
Do not confuse the urge with an instruction.
Slow your breathing.
Allow the feeling to exist.
Choose behavior based on values, not immediate relief.
Try It Now
Remember
An urge is a feeling of wanting to act. It is not a command.
