Skill

Pause Before Responding

Give yourself enough time to choose instead of react.

What it is

Pausing before responding means deliberately delaying your answer long enough to decide whether your first reaction is the response you want to give.

How to do it
Do not answer immediately.
Take one or two slow breaths.
Notice what you want to say.
Ask whether it will help or escalate.
Speak only when you can own the words afterward.
Try It Now
Remember
The first thing you want to say does not have to be the thing you say.
Want to understand this more deeply?
