Skill

Use Healthy Distraction

Redirect attention long enough for emotional intensity to decrease.

Before you use this with another personUse communication, repair, return, or contact only when it is lawful and the other person is willing. If a court order limits contact, location, or communication, follow it exactly. A coping or communication skill never creates permission to call, text, message, visit, follow, return, or use another person to pass a message.
What it is

Healthy distraction means temporarily shifting attention away from an emotionally intense situation so the feeling has time to decrease.

How to do it
Choose an activity that requires some attention.
Give yourself a defined period away from the issue.
Avoid activities that keep you connected to the conflict.
Revisit the issue later only if contact is lawful, appropriate, and wanted.
Try It Now
Remember
You are allowed to stop thinking about the problem before you are ready to solve it.
